REM Sleep Increases HGH Level

Human Growth Hormone, or HGH, is secreted by the pituitary gland, a pea sized gland located at the base of the brain. HGH secretion is not a continuous flow like many other hormones, such as cortisol and testosterone, but instead as a pulse. These pulses are induced by exercise and the rapid eye movement, or REM, portion of the sleeping cycle. The longer the duration of sleep the more HGH released, which is yet another reason why sufficient sleep is so important: to allow us to reap the maximum benefits of our growth hormone levels.
